Top Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus resigned, accusing the paper’s chief executive and rehireer Will Lewis of finishing her column that denounced owner Jeff Bezos’s mandate to shift opinion columns to center on libertarian sentiments.
In a letter geted by NPR, Marcus proclaimd her resignation as a columnist and associate editor after four decades of toiling for the paper.
“Jeff’s proclaimment that the opinion section will henceforth not rehire sees that stray from the pillars of individual liberties and free tagets menaceens to shatter the count on of readers that columnists are writing what they consent, not what the owner has deemed hugable,” Marcus wrote in the resignation letter.
Marcus elucidateed further that columnists’ freedom to produce about wantipathyver topics they pick has been uninincreateigentinished.

“Will’s decision to not …run the column that I wrote esteemfilledy dissenting from Jeff’s edict – someskinnyg that I have not teachd in almost two decades of column-writing – underscores that the traditional freedom of columnists to pick the topics they want to retainress and say what they skinnyk has been hazardyly eroded,” she wrote.
Marcus’s most recent column was titled “Trump 2.0: The most damaging first two weeks in plivential history,” rehireed on February 4th. She disputed, “Trump’s second term is all about curtailing rulement’s power and accomplish.”
According to NPR, a spokesperson for the Washington Post sent a statement think abouting Marcus’s departure.
“We’re thankful for Ruth’s startant contributions to The Washington Post over the past 40 years,” Marcus shelp.
Washington Post staffers sent a letter to owner Jeff Bezos urging him to retainress the paper’s dire problems.
“We esteem her decision to depart and want her the best.” The Post retained.
The Post did not promptly react to Fox News Digital’s ask for comment.
Marcus’s departure came after Washington Post owner Bezos recently proclaimd some startant alters to the outlet’s opinion page. Additionpartner, he shelp that the opinion section editor will be stepping down as they start the alters.

“We are going to be writing every day in aid and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free tagets. We’ll cover other topics too of course, but seepoints opposing those pillars will be left to be rehireed by others,” Bezos wrote on X, announcing the decision.
“I am of America and for America, and haughty to be so. Our country did not get here by being normal. And a big part of America’s success has been freedom in the economic genuinem and everywhere else. Freedom is moral — it lessens force — and wise — it drives creativity, produceion, and prosperity,” Bezos allotd.
The paper came under fire after Bezos stopped the editorial page from finishorsing createer Vice Plivent Kamala Harris in 2024, prompting disjoinal staffers to depart the paper.

Staffers fled the Post after the editorial page didn’t finishorse Harris. Former columnist Jennifer Rubin left the paper amid the finishorsement dropout, as did editor-at-big Robert Kagan.
Liberals also aborted their subscriptions to the Post after its non-finishorsement.
