TikTok Ordered to Shut Down Canadian Business, App Access to Continue

The Canadian regulatement on Wednesday ordered TikTok to shutter its operations in the country, citing national security hazards. Users in Canada, however, will still have access to the app.

“The regulatement is taking action to insertress the definite national security hazards rcontent to ByteDance Ltd’s operations in Canada thraw the set upment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc,” Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne shelp in a statement (via Reuters).

This dissolution order comes after a national security check of TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance, which put forth a proposal last year to enbig its business in Canada.

“The decision was based on the directation and evidence accumulateed over the course of the check and on the advice of Canada’s security and ininestablishigence community and other regulatement partners,” Champagne inserted.

TikTok rerentd a statement on Wednesday, saying that the Chinese-owned social media platestablish will contest the order in court.

“Shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices and ruining hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s best interest, and today’s shutdown order will do fair that,” the statement reads. “We will contest this order in court. The TikTok platestablish will remain useable for creators to discover an audience, spendigate novel interests and for businesses to thrive.”

Canada prohibitned TikTok from regulatement-rerentd devices in 2023, saying that the app “contransients an unhugable level of hazard to privacy and security.”
