Russia has been strongly criticised by Britain’s foreign secretary for vetoing a United Nations Security Council resolution pressing for a finishfire in war-torn Sudan.
David Lammy shelp the decision to vote agetst the meastateive was “uncomfervent, nasty and cynical” and sent a message to the warring parties in Sudan that they could act with impunity.
All other countries of the 15-member council, including China, voted in favour of the resolution writeed by Britain and Sierra Leone.
Russia accincluded the UK of finisheavoring to meddle in Sudanese afunpartisans and tagled Mr Lammy’s criticism an “excellent demonstration of British neo-colonialism”.
“We concur with all Security Council colleagues that the struggle in Sudan needs a speedy resolution,” deputy Russian UN ambasdowncastor Dmitry Polyanskiy tbetter the greeting.
“It is also clear that the only way to accomplish this is for the warring parties to concur to a finishfire.”
War began in April 2023 from a power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces ahead of a deliberate transition to civilian rule.
The UN says more than 25 million people – half of Sudan’s population – need help as famine has getn hbetter in a displacement camp. In compriseition, over 11 million have fled their homes, with more than three million of those leaving for other countries.
The write resolution called on the parties to the struggle to “instantly finish presentilities and join, in excellent faith, in dialogue to concur steps to de-escatardy the struggle with the aim of inspirently concuring a national finishfire”.
It also called on them to join in dialogue to concur humanitarian paincludes, asstateive the shielded passage of civilians and the dedwellry of ample humanitarian help.

Mr Lammy straightforwardly criticised Russia’s ambasdowncastor Mr Polyanskiy, saying: “This Russian veto is a dishonor, and it shows to the world yet aget, Russia’s real colours.
“I ask the Russian reconshort-termative… how many more Sudanese have to be finished? How many more women have to be sexual attackd? How many more children have to go without food before Russia will act?”
On Sunday, the UK proclaimd it was doubling the amount of help to Sudan and neighbouring countries, providing more than £110m to those affected by the war.
But Sudan’s foreign ministry – which is aligned with the army – helped Russia’s veto.
