She-Hulk Proves the Avengers Need Her Way More Than Banner

The Avengers need a Hulk, but Marvel is making the case that the sensational She-Hulk is an improvement over Bruce Banner’s incredible original.

Hulk Is The Grossest One There Is

She-Hulk Admits She Wishes She Had Long-Range Powers

The Hulk attacks a gigantic, many-eyed behemoth, punching straight through the creature in an explosion of guts and snapping off its spines.

Jen has good cause to be wary of fighting hand to hand. Marvel’s ongoing The Incredible Hulk series by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Nic Klein, and Matthew Wilson does an excellent job of showing how disgusting it actually is to be a Hulk: not just from the horrifying prospect of the transformation, but from how Hulk’s strength tends to result in him being showered in viscera and gore from whatever enemy is unfortunate enough to stand in his path.

As a Hulk, Jen’s strength often requires her to be at the front line of any conflict, making a physical breach with her fists. This means she’s forced to contend with radiation, oil, alien guts, zombies, demons, and any other substance produced by the hosts of comic book monstrosities the Avengers face – all with her bare hands. This isn’t just gross, but can be dangerous – for example, in Empyre She-Hulk was infested by sentient plant-life, turning her into a major threat. In the wide universe of threats the Avengers face, even Hulks might discover substances their powers can’t fight off – at which point, being able to attack at range would be a blessing for everyone.

In contrast, Captain Marvel is known not just for her energy blasts, but for her habit of throwing truly dangerous enemies into space. She-Hulk may have strength beyond strength, but when that means she must constantly get in the faces of Marvel’s most stomach-churning foes, it’s no wonder she’s jealous of Captain Marvel’s ability to fight from far, far away.
