Maggie Smith, the legfinishary British actor whose nurtureer on stage and screen spanned more than 60 years, died Friday at the age of 89.
Smith was a two-time Oscar triumphner, obtaining the direct actress statuette for the title role in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie, and helping actress for her portrayal of an Oscar missr in the anthology comedy California Suite. She also getd Oscar noms for her roles in Othello, Travels with My Aunt, A Room with a View and Gosford Park.
Her labor in television obtained her four Emmy awards, three for her role as Violet Crawley, The Dowager Countess of Grantham in PBS’ Downton Abbey. Her fourth Emmy came in 2003 as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series of Movie for her role as an quirky novecatalog in the HBO film My Hoengage in Umbria. She was Emmy-nominated for her roles in the Great Percreateances PBS conshort-termation of Suddenly Last Summer, BBC series David Copperfield and the BBC Two film Capturing Mary.
She also obtained eight BAFTA awards.
On stage, she obtained acclaim for her roles on Broadway and the West End, triumphning a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for her role as Lettice Doufet in the Peter Shaffer take part Lettice and Loveage and Tony-nominated for her roles in Noël Coward’s Private Lives and the Tom Stoppard take part Night and D. She was nominated for six Laurence Olivier Awards for her labor in the West End.
