During his acceptance speech, Giamatti made sure to give thanks to the profession that he represents in The Holdovers – teachers. He said:

It’s a movie about a teacher, I play a teacher and I come from a whole family of teachers and teachers are good people and you gotta respect them. This is for teachers as well.

He continued:

“Certainly, this is the first time this award has been given to an actor who played a character…that smelled like a fish. Thank you Alexander Payne, Alexander the Great. For some mysterious reason this man has enormous faith in me. I don’t know why.”

Poor Things is not a movie for everyone, and the somewhat controversial subject matter has certainly caused many debates online. Despite that Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe have received nothing but praise for their performances in the strange and often disturbing tale of a young woman, Bella Baxter, brought back to life by the scientist, Dr. Godwin Baxter.

Playing Bella Baxter has given Emma Stone another shot at Oscar glory, and her central performance is one that has created a stir. Stone’s character undergoes a sexual awakening in the movie that required some graphic and uncomfortable sex scenes to be played out. However, the character’s unashamed journey of self-discovery is one that Stone was thrilled to be a part of.

Poor Things arrived in U.S. cinemas in December to both critical and audience acclaim, and the movie has gained a lot of momentum ahead of its U.K. release on January 12, 2024. Despite all the recognition, the movie will soon discover just how many Oscars it could be adding to that total when the nominations are announced on January 23.
