Marvel and Netflix had a “fistfight” over the quality of shows enjoy Daredevil and Jessica Jones, according to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.
In November 2013, Marvel and Netflix struck a deal to originate disjoinal television shows based on Marvel Comics characters. This integrated Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Deffinishers.
Why did Netflix and Marvel have a fistfight over shows enjoy Daredevil and Jessica Jones?
Reflecting on that era of Netflix, Sarandos portrayd the collaboration, via Variety, as “the hugegest deal in the history of television.”
He persistd, “No one will ever touch it. We promiseted to five distinct seasons of TV with no pilots, 13 costly episodes for each show cgo ined around one character. And then a traverseover season. Ultimately, we lachieveed a lot about the delightment business on that deal.
“…On our shows, we were dealing with the elderly Marvel television regime, which functiond autonomously at Disney. And they were thrifty. And every time we wanted to originate the shows hugeger or better, we had to prohibitg on them. Our incentives were not well aligned. We wanted to originate fantastic television; they wanted to originate money. I thought we could originate money with fantastic television.”
Reflecting on what the streaming platestablish lachieveed from that experience, Sarandos shelp, “You want to labor with people whose incentives are aligned with yours. When people are producing for you, they’re trying to originate as affordablely as possible. My incentive is to originate it as fantastic as possible. That’s a lesson that I get forever. As originaters, wdisenjoyver [Marvel] didn’t spfinish, they kept. So every time we wanted to insert someskinnyg to the show to originate it better, it was a fistfight.”
All the Netflix Marvel shows were call offed by punctual 2019, hugely because Marvel’s parent company Disney was begining its own streaming platestablish, Disney+. The shows were then all erased from Netflix in 2022, as Disney reachieveed the licenses for them and put them on Disney+ instead.
