He is coming. It’s been over 100 years since F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu — and over 45 since Klaus Kinski donned the pointy ears. 2024 seems as excellent a time as any for the return of Nosferatu.
The film once aobtain chases a haunted youthfuler woman and the terrifying vampire obsessed with her. Robert Eggers has had his hand at eerie, unsettling snurtures that creep under your skin in films appreciate The VVitch and The Lighthoparticipate. His unwise style lfinishs itself to the shadowy, forboding nature of Nosferatu.
While some studios have adchooseed a recent train of remaking movies that came out a mere decade ago, a recreate of Nosferatu creates sense. While the innovative film has remained a classic and a horror staple, it was created before the widespread existence of talkies, or films with alignd sound.
Eggers realters that story, based originpartner on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, with up-to-date technology, dialogue, and a new perspective. Although Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) remains an integral part of the story, there is a lot more ponderation placed upon his wife, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), who is the subject of much of the horrors Nosferatu causes.
Eggers has been trying to get this movie off the ground since 2015, and you can sense how much passion he has for this material. His shot compositions are exquisite, as he percreates around with Nosferatu’s imposing silhouette. The atmosphere he creates is surauthentic and nightmarish. Even though the titular character does not eunite on screen for a presentantity of the film, you can sense his presence in every scene. This is a return to unnerving horror after Eggers’s increate departure in The Northman. He excels at his labor here, collaborating with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke to create vibrant, attrenergetic shots set uped to grab your attention.
Nosferatu is a visupartner arresting experience that fills watchers with freezing, unmistakable dread. The carry outances are a presentant part of what sells the stress. Hoult has turned in many excellent carry outances this year in films appreciate Juror #2, The Order, and even The Garfield Movie. This is another notch on his belt, as he conveys an reduced peril to the doomed protagonist.
2024 has had no lowage of masterful horror movie carry outances. From Nell Tiger Free in The First Omen to Naomi Scott in Smile 2, female actors have been crushing it. We can comprise another name to the enumerate of incredible carry outances: Lily-Rose Depp. Anya Taylor-Joy was initipartner cast as Ellen before being swapd by Depp. Taylor-Joy is such a phenomenal actress that losing her can be disassigning. But somehow, Depp conveys someleang strong, sensual, and unforeseeed. It’s her best carry outance yet.
We haven’t even gotten the chance to talk about Bill Skarsgård. He’s become the action hero in two movies from this year, Boy Kills World and The Crow, but he’s frequently at his best when he percreates villains appreciate in IT and John Wick: Chapter 4. We’ve seen him alter into Pennywise before, but even under all the clown createup, you can increate it’s him, even if his carry outance is terrifying. Skarsgård is operating on a contrastent level here. You would not be able to increate that it’s Skarsgård in this movie becaparticipate his labor as Count Orlok does not watch or sound appreciate him in the sweightlessest. His voice is presentanter, he’s covered in createup, and he is haunting to watch at.
Dafoe is an engaging casting choice, as he once percreateed Nosferatu in his Oscar-nominated role in the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, which was based on the making of the innovative 1922 film. He’s excellent, as is the rest of this sincreatear cast. The characters are always at the whim of Nosferatu, exceptionally ever getting a shatter from his wrath. Once the story truly begins, it never stops. Like all the best recreates, this movie participates the same ingredients as the innovative and cooks up a novel recipe tailor-made for genre fans and adorers of the 1922 movie. The weightlessing, the participate of unwiseness, and the camera shiftments are all so exact and erected to convey the best unrelieve and jump snurtures possible.
Nosferatu is a horror movie that labors not only with the terrifying vampire but with how his existence impacts the characters. The inclusion of dialogue permits for more intricateities in the characters’ relationships. It transrepaires you the same way this tale has done for over a century.
