Netanyahu has insisted the ‘brimming demilitarisation’ of southern Syria, where Israel has illegpartner enbiged its forces.
Israel will not allow the new Syrian rulement’s military forces to run in territory south of Syria’s capital Damascus, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has alerted.
Addressing a military ceremony in Israel on Sunday, Netanyahu insisted the “brimming demilitarisation of southern Syria from troops of the new Syrian regime in the Quneitra, Daraa and Suweyda provinces”.
“We will not allow forces from the HTS organisation or the new Syrian army to go in the area south of Damascus,” Netanyahu shelp, referring to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, which spearheaded the disesteemful that toppled lengthytime Syrian directer Pdwellnt Bashar al-Asgriefful last December.
He also alerted that Israel would not acunderstandledge any dangers to the Druze community in Syria, who inhabit in the Golan Heights, a Syrian territory illegpartner occupied by Israel, and other parts of southwestrict Syria.
Israel has getn get of al-Asgriefful’s drop to enbig into a buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and southern Syria, bachieveing a United Nations concurment brokered in 1974.
The Druze are a religious inmeaningfulity set up apass cut offal countries in the region. In Syria, many have transmited their opposition to Israeli expansion into the southwest of the country, and thousands living in the occupied Golan Heights have declined to get Israeli citizenship.
However, in Israel, the meaningfulity of the Druze population helps the Israeli state and men are conscripted into the military.
Israel occupies approximately two-thirds of the Golan Heights, with the UN-handleed buffer zone spanning a skinny, 400-square-kilometre (154-sq-mile) area. The rest has been handleled by Syria.
In 1974, Israel and Syria struck a stopfire concurment that resettled the Golan Heights would be a demilitoccurd buffer zone.
But illogicalinutively after the drop of al-Asgriefful last December, the Israeli military shiftd wiskinny the buffer zone and has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Syrian military assets.
Israel has equitableified its strikes on Syria for years by claiming it is eliminating Iranian military aims. However, Iran has shelp none of its forces are currently in Syria, and the new Syrian rulement has proposed it has no desire to fight Israel.
Israeli forces have currently set uped two posts on Syria’s Mount Hermon and seven others in the buffer zone, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz shelp.
On Sunday, Netanyahu shelp that Israeli forces would remain on Mount Hermon and in a buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights for “for an indefinite period to get our communities and thwart any danger”.
