Summary

  • Chad Stahelski, director of John Wick, wants to make a Star Wars movie and challenges Disney to give him a chance.
  • Stahelski’s action spectacle would bring a fresh perspective to the Jedi world, and he dares Disney to take on his vision.
  • Stahelski is focused on reviving the Highlander franchise, with a reboot starring Henry Cavill aiming for a 2026 release.

The director behind the hugely successful action franchise John Wick, Chad Stahelski, would love to bring some of his action movie chops to a galaxy far, far away. Appearing recently on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski described himself as “a Star Wars guy,” and revealed his hope that, someday, Disney will give him the reins to his own Star Wars movie.

“I’m a Star Wars guy, like the first Star Wars changed my life course. Maybe someday out there, Disney, if you’re listening.”

We can only image what glorious action spectacle Chad Stahelski would bring to the world of the Jedi, with the John Wick: Chapter 4 filmmaker daring Disney to give him a go.

“I’d take a swing at that. I challenge you to see if Disney could survive me.”

Following the release of the divisive Star Wars sequel trilogy, the franchise has moved away from the big screen (for now) and onto the small, with Disney+ debuting all manner of projects set in the iconic universe, including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Star Wars: Visions, and more.

And there’s much more to come, with the likes of Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte both set for release this year. Meanwhile, on the big screen, a project centered on Daisy Ridley’s character Rey is now in the works.

So, should Stahelski be given the chance to join the Star Wars fray, there should be plenty of scope for him to explore.

For now, Stahelski is working hard on reviving a different sci-fi franchise: Highlander. The long-awaited reboot starring Henry Cavill has been in the works for quite some time, but was recently given a major update regarding release. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake revealed during a recent investor call that the movie is aiming to hit theaters in 2026, meaning we are edging ever closer to seeing Cavill wield a sword and declare that “There Can Only Be One!”

Released back in 1986, the original Highlander follows swordsman Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert). MacLeod discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be killed only by beheading. After living peacefully for centuries, MacLeod is dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to kill him.

A reboot has been in development since as far back as 2008, with the movie finally being confirmed towards the end of last year with Chad Stahelski at the helm alongside The Witcher’s Henry Cavill in the role of Connor MacLeod. And Stahelski has big plans for Highlander…

“Highlander, I can tell you right now, if we’ve got our sh-t together and pull off a feature, we’ve got ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and make that an epic TV show. I just think that’s a rich, rich, rich mythology. You can pick any period in time, any nationality, any culture, any type of person and make them an immortal that have to duel and deal with the burden of immortality? That’s f-cking cool to me.”

As for Stahelski’s other major franchise, John Wick, a fifth movie is now reportedly being written as we speak, with several spinoffs also in development. Ultimately, even if Disney gives Stahelski a call, he may find himself far too busy to commit to the Star Wars saga.
