Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson survived being hooked to death by the vengeful Ben Willis (Muse Watson) not once but twice back in the 1990s. And Prinze Jr. is truly “motivated” to portray the I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) survivor once again in director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s upcoming horror follow-up. But Prinze Jr.’s involvement will ultimately depend on scheduling and the quality of the screenplay. Prinze Jr. said in an interview with Us Weekly:
“Nothing’s a lock until there’s ink on paper, until the contract’s signed, but I’m definitely talking to them.
And if we can make everything work —
and I know they wanna make everything work,
I know I wanna make everything work — then we’ll try and make it work.
But we gotta make sure everyone’s schedules fit.”
Prinze Jr., who portrayed Julie James’ (Jennifer Love Hewitt) love interest in both the original 1997 film and the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, continued by saying in the same interview (below):
“Everybody has to be happy with the script.
I know Jen Robinson, the director [of the reboot], and I like Jen Robinson very much as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business.
So, there’s a lot of good things that make me want to do the movie. I’m motivated,
I know they’re motivated.
I know both sides are trying to make it work.
And hopefully we do.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt Dishes About I Know What You Did Last Summer Follow-Up
While Freddie Prinze Jr. is still in talks to return as Ray Bronson, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s I Know What Did Last Summer has already cast its five leads: Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King. Plus, Jennifer Love Hewitt continues to discuss possibly reprising the role of Julie James in the franchise’s legacy sequel. Hewitt said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
“It honestly is wild to even think about.
If it truly comes together, I don’t even know how I’m gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful, but it’s wild to think about.
It’s nice to know that people are excited at the possibility.
I think it would be really fun if it came together.”
Hewitt continued:
“I think there’s power in being older.
There’s power in having gone off and had three kids. There’s a sense of, like, I can do anything now.
The vulnerability that was Julie James in one and two definitely doesn’t exist in this one.
I’m excited to just show her grown up.”
Another actor could also theoretically make the cut, if Robinson decides to resurrect the hook-handed fisherman Ben Willis, who was masterfully portrayed by Muse Watson. Sure, Julie (Hewitt) emptied a full revolver’s worth of bullets into Willis at the conclusion of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but he could have been wearing a bulletproof vest. After all, Julie made the mistake of not shooting the serial killer in the head.

Plus, if Robinson’s I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) does in fact pull a Halloween (2018), and it totally disregards all the movies in the series except the original, there’s even a better chance of Watson reprising his role as the dreaded fisherman. And Watson loves his contribution to the horror genre. The actor said in an interview, via a Blu-ray extra feature titled He Still Knows What You Did, (per Are You Scared HD): “How do I feel being ranked with other icons? It’s an honor to me that the fans of horror accept my portrayal.”
