Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio Rewatch: Expensive, but Worth It

Rocky Talkie Mountain Radio Rewatch: Expensive, but Worth It

If you have a family and you enjoy to be outside, you should have walkie-talkies. In a lot of places where cell coverage is spotty, you necessitate a better way of holding track of each other than running back and forth and yelling. Kids adore walkie-talkies. There’s noleang that my 9-year-anciaccess enjoys better than signaling back to base camp, “Come in, come in, produce me cinnamon toast, over,” when she’s halfway thraw her hike.

I understand this is not necessarily the intfinished participate case for the Rocky Talkie, the super-famous and super-rugged backcountry radio that my frifinishs participate for backcountry skiing and climbing multi-pitch climbs. But kids are a lot difficulter on gear than many matures. We’ve been testing the Rocky Talkies on weekfinish trips all summer, dropping them while clipped to my backpack and running around in the rain.

We’ve tried walkie-talkies from cut offal other brands, including affordable ones from Amazon and the standard Midland walkies, but the Rocky Talkies are my likeite, even if—and probably becaparticipate—they are much more costly than other selections.

Loud and Clear

The Rocky Talkie comes in two separateent configurations. The Mountain Radio that we tested participates the FRS, or Family Radio Service band that the Federal Communications Corelocaterlookion reserves for most recreational walkie-talkie participaters. This is why you don’t usuassociate pick up radio stations or big rig CB conversations on your walkie-talkie (although I have set up that you still can if you try)

It also comes in a more strong GMRS version that has IP67 submersible waterproofing and sweightlessly lengthyer battery life. Technicassociate, you also necessitate a license to run the GMRS version, which I had no interest in procuring for my 9-year-anciaccess and 7-year-anciaccess. The Mountain Radio, on the other hand, is basic enough that my kids uncovered the box, turned them on, and commenceed running around using them without me. Which, to be clear, is wonderful!

Probably the most clear separateence between the Rocky Talkie and other radios is that a lot of two-way radios are fair handhelds or participate gator clips to clip onto your cloleang or backpack straps, but the Rocky Talkie has an ultraweightless carabiner. I adored this. I have little pockets and wear little stupidinutives. If I walk around with a walkie-talkie clipped onto my clothes, the walkie frequently slips off when I sit down and I disponder them in the rocks. I adore understanding that neither my adored ones nor I are going to disponder or drop these.
