Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions – Release Date Info, Price, & Platforms

Quidditch lovers around the world can let out a cheer because an all-new video game, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions has officially been announced and is coming to bring players back to the fast-paced magical sport. Many fans have been requesting an updated Quidditch game ever since the success of the Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup game in 2003. Now, though the games are not said to be related, Portkey Games and Unbroken Studios are showing off Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, which appears to be a similar style of game, but featuring modern graphics and technology.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is not part of Hogwarts Legacy either, but will instead be a standalone game that specifically focuses on the iconic wizarding world sport of Quidditch. Hogwarts Legacy was released in 2023, and although it is a great game in its own right, it disappointed many fans with the decision to remove Quidditch from the game. Many have hoped that a DLC would be announced to correct this error, but perhaps that will not be the case now that a separate Quidditch video game, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, is on the horizon.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Will Be Released September 3, 2024

Pre-Orders Available Now For Select Platforms

According to a “Welcome Students” trailer from the Warner Bros. Games YouTube channel, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will be released on September 3, 2024, on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. According to the FAQ on the Quidditch Champions website, the Nintendo Switch version will not release until the 2024 holiday season, potentially more than four months later. Also per the game’s website, pre-orders are available now, but only for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store). It is unclear why PlayStation pre-orders are not yet available.

Available Day One On PlayStation Plus

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions has been priced at $29.99 USD for the game’s Digital Standard Edition. The Digital and Physical Deluxe Editions are slightly more expensive at $39.99 USD. Purchasing the Deluxe Edition will not have any bearing on gameplay itself, as the only extra benefits for doing so will be cosmetic; the Deluxe Editions come with four House Packs, outlined in the table below, in addition to 2,000 gold redeemable for more in-game items.

Of special interest to those with a PS4 or PS5 is the additional release info that Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will be available on PlayStaton Plus at no extra cost when it releases on September 3. It’s not clear yet whether this is an additional offering for the PS Plus monthly games, or if it will be one of the usual three available for all tiers of the subscription service. Quidditch Champions will be available via PlayStation Plus from September 3 to September 30, 2024, and will remain playable by those who claim it as long as a subscription remains active.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Platforms

All Major Consoles & PC

According to the FAQ page for Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, the game will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It would appear that the Nintendo Switch is the only platform getting a delayed release, a similar strategy to that which was adopted by publisher WB Games for the latest Harry Potter video game, Hogwarts Legacy. Unlike Hogwarts Legacy‘s staggered release, however, the PS4 and Xbox One versions will release alongside their current-gen counterparts.

The Nintendo Switch version is likely delayed because of special optimization requirements. The Switch has significantly lower hardware specifications than even the launch-model PS4 and Xbox One. However, a silver lining is that the expected Nintendo Switch successor console is rumored to be backward compatible, so Quidditch Champions may carry over to the new hardware, and there’s even a chance that an enhanced port is released for the new console.

Game Modes In Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions

Single-Player & Multiplayer

Like other sporting games, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will offer a strong focus on competitive multiplayer modes. The gameplay trailer and the game’s listings on various storefronts (like Steam) indicate that Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will focus on three-versus-three gameplay, despite Quidditch being a seven-person sport. Players can, however, select from any of the available positions: Beater, Chaser, Keeper, and Seeker.

The long-term draw of the game appears to be online PvP, though it remains to be seen if the “competitive online matches against other Quidditch teams” involve any sort of ranking system. The trailer does imply there are some form of tournaments, with the Quidditch World Cup as the premier competition. Exhibition Matches are also playable online in co-op with friends in teams of three, and let players set the teams, maps, and difficulty.

Quidditch Champions‘ Career Mode can also be played in teams of three, but it seems to be the designated single-player option. It seems to feature progressively harder Quidditch matches, “from backyard battles in the Weasley Burrow to high-stakes showdowns at the Quidditch World Cup.” Considering the relatively low price of Quidditch Champions, it remains to be seen how deep the Career Mode is, as the game seems to have a rather straightforward focus on customizing a character for online play.

Customizing Characters Will Be A Feature Of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions

Harry Potter Characters Are Also Playable

Players will be able to customize their characters in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. The gameplay trailer reveals an apparently quite extensive character customization screen, though there doesn’t appear to be any sliders, only present options to be mixed and matched. Players can select their character’s physical appearance – hairstyle, skin tone, etc. – but also a variety of outfit options, including Hogwarts robes, more casual clothes, headgear, and eyewear.

There are also a number of broomstick skins for players to add even more personalization to their character. As revealed by the trailer, a chosen broom may have more impact than just looks, though. Each broom has Speed, Durabiltiy, and Agiltiy statistics, which can be upgraded. Skins don’t appear to affect the stats, but these suggest there are multiple brooms to unlock and upgrade in Quidditch Champions.

If players prefer, there are also a handful of established characters included in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. So far, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Cho Chang, and Draco Malfoy have been confirmed as playable characters. It is unclear how these characters fit into each game mode, and if they’ll be available for online matches. Presumably, more than these four will be in the game; many more Weasley family members than just Ron were known Quidditch players, for instance.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions Is Not Connected To Any Other Harry Potter Game

Standalone Quidditch Experience

Although the announcement for Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions came just months after Hogwarts Legacy was released and many fans have been predicting a Quidditch-themed DLC for Hogwarts Legacy, this is an entirely separate, standalone game. Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions has no correlation to either Hogwarts Legacy, nor the 2003 Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup game, other than being set in the wizarding world and letting players play Quidditch.

With its release on September 3, 2024, Quidditch Champions will seemingly fill a niche that has been noticeably empty, finally giving Harry Potter fans a dedicated multiplayer Quidditch game. The wizarding sport has been exceedingly popular since it debuted in the novels, even being adapted into a real-life sport played on foot. Customizing one’s own Quidditch competitor will certainly be a highlight of the game, and hopefully the gameplay in Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions lives up to expectations.
