Max, formerly (and still in some regions) known as HBO Max, is among the top streaming services in the world, thanks to the wide range of programs it offers from libraries of Discovery, HBO, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and many others. Furthermore, the streamer is well-known for producing its own content under the “Max Originals” banner, collaborating with prominent production companies such as BBC Studios.
We’ve seen some popular movies and TV shows released on Max this year, with anticipated titles like Love Lies Bleeding and Kite Man: Hell Yeah! coming out in July. While no new releases are included, Max offers some of the most popular and highly rated films in the following month. With that in mind, here’s a list of every film coming to Max in August 2024.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
Streaming August 1
There have been several versions of Sherlock Holmes throughout the years, but Robert Downey Jr.’s sardonic portrayal of the iconic character remains a one-of-a-kind experience. Sherlock Holmes, directed by Guy Ritchie, is an Oscar-nominated film that follows Holmes and his assistant, Dr. Watson, as they track down the notorious serial killer Blackwood and put an end to his terror.
However, when the killer mysteriously returns from the grave and resumes the killing spree, the duo embarks on a new adventure to hunt him down. The film, which also stars Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, and Robert Maillet, will be available on Max beginning Aug. 1.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)

How to Train Your Dragon is widely regarded as one of the best animated franchises of all time, with three feature films: How to Train Your Dragon (2010), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014), and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) released to date. With a new live-action reboot in the works, there is no better time to revisit the classic film that started it all.

The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
Streaming August 18
The Legend of Tarzan, released in 2016, is a fresh interpretation of the classic story that follows John Clayton, who left his former life as Tarzan behind to become the legitimate heir to Clayton’s family. While it isn’t quite what many expected from a Tarzan film, it was certainly a breath of fresh air, with exceptional performances from the cast members Alexander Skarsgård, Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, and Christopher Waltz. The film’s official synopsis is as follows:
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Margot Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.
