Euphoria star Colman Domingo offers an intriguing update on the long wait for season 3. It has been over two years since the show’s second season premiered, and it was officially renewed for season 3, but production on the new season hasn’t started yet. Given that the show has attained high critical acclaim for its performances and tackling of mature subjects, the long delay has inevitably stirred many questions about the show’s status and the reason for the season gap.

In an interview with GQ, Domingo addressed Euphoria‘s season 3 delay. He expressed his belief that the delay is for a positive reason and reflects Levinson’s extensive rewrites of the season. According to Domingo, Levison may be grappling with major “existential” questions that require much thought and careful crafting. Check out his statement below:

[Sam is] a person who writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again, because I think he’s wrestling with what’s important. He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls. That’s what he wants to figure out with season three.

Domingo’s latest statement isn’t the first time he has mentioned rewrites for Euphoria season 3. Several weeks ago, he revealed that Levinson was in the process of rewriting season 3. While he was firm that the season was still happening and hadn’t been canceled, he admitted it would be challenging. In between Euphoria seasons, the show faced two major losses after star Angus Cloud and producer Kevin Turen passed away. Hence, Domingo explained that Levinson was doing rewrites and re-examining the show and premise after the losses.

Domingo is likely correct that a large part of Euphoria‘s season 3 delay has to do with rewrites. It makes sense that Levinson would wish to make the season into one that truly honors Angus and Turen by answering the difficult existential questions that are often raised by loss. He could be trying to do something similar to Ryan Coogler’s reworking of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever following the passing of Chadwick Boseman, however, there are also a few other factors contributing to the show’s delay.

Euphoria was impacted by the Hollywood labor strikesover the summer. It wasn’t able to begin production, and Levinson had to wait until the end of the writer’s strike in late September to even begin considering rewrites. On top of that, its talented cast, including Dune: Part Two‘s Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and Hunter Schaefer, have all branched out in different directions and likely have very demanding schedules. Aside from a few uncontrollable factors, it seems Euphoria‘s delay is for a good reason, as Levinson takes his time respectfully handling a challenging season 3.

The first two seasons of Euphoria are available to stream on Max.
