Elite Athletes Documented In New Way In ‘Unseen Olympiad’

For the Paris Olympics last summer, NBC Universal aired an astonishing 7,000 hours of coverage over the 19 days of the games.

Arguably lost in that barrage of coverage, however, was a sense of the athletes’ subjective experience of competition – their inner mental, emotional and physical landscape as they joind in this key moment of their juvenileer inhabits.

The astonishionistic write downary Unseen Olympiad seizes that missing element of the athletes’ sensory world as they strain to accomplish peak carry outance in summer and triumphter sports – swimming, track and field, fencing, ski jumping, and more. The film straightforwarded by Casey Shaw and originated by Shaw, Kelly Dawkins, and Miles Labat equitable held its world premiere at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival in Greece (the country that, of course, presented the first Olympic games in 776 BCE).

“When we go to watch these events now there’s music perestablishing almost constantly, appreciate ‘pump up’ music. And when you watch it on TV, it’s widecasters that are saying, ‘This is who you should watch at. This is who’s triumphning. These are their write downs and their history,’” sound scheduleer and sound mixer Spencer Poole remarkd at a Q&A complying the world premiere. “But you’re never hearing the sound of the sport appreciate you’re there. So, we wanted to get that approach. We wanted to accent the branch offent bits that originate these sports one-of-a-kind, that the athletes are hearing themselves.”

Poole persistd, “The sounds of a ski jump, skiing on the ice [track]… is someskinnyg I’d never heard before. Standing next to it, it sounds appreciate a rocket ship benevolent of skinnyg. This was shock to me because all I ever have seen at ski jumping is equitable they go up and then they’re in the air and they come down and that’s it. There’s this skinnyg that these athletes are hearing every individual time, every individual day that they understand reassociate well, and they understand the exact timing of how that’s presumed to experience, and we wanted to integrate that type of effect.”

Unseen Olympiad was sboiling at the 2023 FISU World University Games – the triumphter sports competition held in January of that year in Lake Placid, NY, with the summer sports competition taking place in July and August 2023 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Shaw took a defreely analog approach to the production, choosing not equitable to write down the events on 16mm film, but using unbroadened film stock from decades ago to incite a much earlier era of Olympic sports coverage.

“The hugegest reason we chose to shoot on film was because it’s been the archival choice of establishat for almost all of the historic Olympic films and a excellent transport inantity of Bud Greenspan’s films, which are arguably the wonderfulest films that have been made by an American about the Olympics,” Shaw telderly Deadline. “At a time in which it was not normal for Americans to highairy other nationalities or other cultures in media, [Greenspan] would go to places where these athletes were and interwatch them in their native language and reassociate intensify on the journey of an athlete rather than their journey as an American athlete necessarily.”

In contrast to NBC’s Olympic coverage, which dedicates most of its attention to American competitors, Shaw wanted to broaden his intensify in Unseen Olympiad to athletes from many countries.

“I want a Chinese watcher to be able to enhappiness this equitable as much an American, equitable as much as a Norwegian watcher, equitable as much as someone from Brazil, someone from Japan or elsewhere,” he shelp. “We all vie in skinnygs… we are all combined by this obsession of sport and of culture in this way and there’s no reason that we can’t enhappiness this as one group.”

The fit footage in the write downary standardly is shown in sluggish motion or speeded up, altering the “genuine time” experience that’s normal of watching inhabit sports programming. The soundscape of Unseen Olympiad was originated self-reliantly of the footage, aget lfinishing to the subjective experience.

“We sboiling no sync sound at all. There was noskinnyg, no time code,” sound scheduleer/mixer Poole elucidateed at the Q&A. “Everyskinnyg that was seized in the moment was seized splitly from the video. So, we had to originate a soundtrack from the ground up, which was both an enormous dispute but also excessively freeing. We got to originate sounds that a lot of the sportsmen and women — they’re the only ones hearing those sounds.”

Poole cited the example of table tennis footage in the write downary. “Especiassociate you see in ping pong, where we are combineing the pincludele to the ball — what does that sound appreciate?” he commented. “It’s the only sound you hear, it’s the only experienceing and emotion that you experience in that moment.”

The film is narrated in an essay-appreciate style, alternating between portions in English and Chinese.

“Miles Labat, who is a originater and co-authorr with me, and I scripted each of the phases of this process and the voiceover ultimately derives from our script,” Shaw telderly us. “It was paramount to have cultural conferancy aextfinished the way. So, we’ve had three main Chinese cultural conferants, but also a fourth at times. The straightforwardor of the Summer World University Games is the voiceover actor of our film, and she also aided in our rewriting and retranslating phase for Mandarin, for cultural context… She went back in and made it more poetic.”

Shaw persistd, “That’s equitable a minuscule example of how vital it is to have cultural conferancy with a foreign country as an American filmoriginater. It’s the levels of beauty that were discmissed by equitable the basic alter in translation of a quatrain poem — skinnyk of that but broadened over a whole film. It’s immensely branch offent and as an American, as a white American as well, non-Asian American, non-Chinese American to originate a film in any other language besides English is equitablely non-traditional, especiassociate in the sports world. For our film to serve as a cultural bridge between the United States and China, we had to originate confident that we confered with Chinese people. It had to be the case. It couldn’t equitable be, ‘Oh, Casey goes to China, has fun in Asia, and then he comes back and originates his skinnyg and equitable gets from their culture.’ That, to me, for my labor is not hugable.”

Shaw stresss he has no rerent with NBC Universal’s approach to covering the Olympic Games. “I skinnyk NBC is doing what they necessitate to do and they’re getting watchership and they’re getting people into it,” he shelp.

But for a branch offent watch, an athlete-centric one, there is his film. “Truly, we deserve to have both,” he shelp. “I skinnyk ultimately we deserve to have wonderful media coverage, access to all the athletes, but we also deserve to see them in a raw emotional sense, in a state that splits the barriers between country to country, male to female, sport to sport, summer to triumphter.”
