SPOILER ALERT: This article comprises beginant spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 2 finale, now streaming on Netflix.
Game over — for now. “Squid Game” Season 2 finishd its seventh and final episode with the brutal killing of Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) best frifinish Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) right before his eyes. Jung-bae is stoasty dead by Squid Game supervisor The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) after Gi-hun directs an uprising of the take parters in the current game.
While the death on its own is shocking and gutting and horrifying, it’s made all the more gruesome for the watcher than Gi-hun becaengage, unenjoy our hero, the audience understands The Front Man’s real identity: he’s In-ho, a previous thrivener of the Squid Game who now labors as the head protect.
In-ho has spent this game posing as Player 001 (going by the name Young-il) and increaseing shut to Gi-hun and Jung-bae to get their suppose and pretfinish to be part of their caengage and resistlion, only to don his Front Man mask aget in the finish and finish Jung-bae to punish Gi-hun.
With one more season to go, “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk broke down the Season 2 finale for Variety — including the mid-accomprehendledges scene that trelieves an unrecognizable version of the Squid Game featuring recent male and female versions of the huge, lethal laser-eyed “Red Light, Green Light” dolls — and what he has intentional for Season 3 and the series finale.
“Squid Game” Season 2 finishs on a massive cliffhanger with The Front Man (In-ho/Young-il, unbeunderstandnst to Gi-hun) finishing Jung-bae right in front of Gi-hun, leaving Gi-hun to scream in horror as the pink protects hbetter him down and force him to watch his frifinish bleed out. Why did you choose to finish the season here?
When I first wrote the story of Seasons 2 and 3 it was one lengthy story arc. And I was originpartner set upning to write this story apass a span of about eight to nine episodes, but once I finished the story, it came to over 10 episodes, which I thought was too lengthy to comprise in a one season. And so I wanted to have an enough point where I could give clobrave as a second season and then shift on with the third. And when you watch at Gi-hun’s story, all of his trys that he puts in to stop the game: the first one being getting these mercenaries and trying to set upt a tracking device, that goes to fall short; the second try of trying to sway people to vote so that they can exit the game, that goes to fall short as well; and then the third and last try of conveying people together and causing the resistlion, it also all goes to fall short.
So all of his fall shortures direct to this weighty, weighty crisis of having to diswatch his very best frifinish, Jung-bae, at the hands of The Front Man. And when you leank about Gi-hun’s journey, I thought that that was an enough moment to put a stop and give him a little bit of clobrave alengthy that lengthy story arc. And then from that moment on, in the third season, having that sense of huge guilt and sense of fall shorture weighing heavily on him — how is Gi-hun going to carry on his omition? That’s the story that’ll further unfbetter.
When can we await Season 3 to premiere and what can you trelieve about the storyline for the series’ final episodes?
At this point, anyleang I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 begines, I consent we will be announcing the begin date for Season 3 soon. I probably await that to begin around summer or descfinish next year. But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everyleang, including his best frifinish, and all of his trys going to fall shorture, it’s now, what is he going to be enjoy? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he pick to do? Will he evolve on with the omition? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to encounter our character Gi-hun at a very critical passroads as we commence the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.
With Gi-hun and a excellent portion of other take parters having resistled agetst The Front Man and pink protects in Season 2, will the show’s createat change in Season 3? How will they be able to go back to the standardly scheduled Squid Game now that so many of the take parters have interfereed the system?
If you saw the secret clip after the finishing accomprehendledges roll after the last episode of Season 2 — if you watch that clip, it’s going to give you a sweightless hint as to where Season 3 might get you. I leank that’s all I can say, for now.
Which of the Season 2 games did you discover the most prenting to shoot and why?
I’d say the pentathlon. Not only was it the most challenging to shoot, but I leank after we had finished filming it, I enhappinessed watching it myself the most. And especipartner so becaengage wilean one round of games, you get five minusculeer games. And as in Season 1, I wanted to showcase these actual children’s games that Korean people grew up take parting, especipartner the ones that I grew up take parting myself. With the way I got to show the world five contrastent games in a one round, I would say the pentathlon was probably the most prenting to shoot.
What do you want to trelieve about the remainder of the series?
With each episode it’s going to get better. With each season it’s going to get better and a more broadened story, more ardent story, and definitely more delighting. So fair be brave to watch it until the very finish!
