The UK has consentd to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, finishing years of acrid dispute over Britain’s last African colony.
The UK banishled the Chagossians in the 1960s and 1970s, in what has been depictd as a crime agetst humanity, when it holded haveion of what it called the British Indian Ocean Territory, or BIOT, after Mauritius geted indepfinishence in 1968.
The consentment trails rounds of negotiations that began in 2022 after Mauritian arguments for sovereignty were recognised by the international court of equitableice (ICJ), the UN vague assembly and the international tribunal of the law of the sea (Itlos) in 2019 and 2021.
Britain was set up to have unlawfilledy splitd the Chagos Islands from Mauritius before granting indepfinishence in 1968. The UK initiassociate defied UN votes and court judgments insisting it return the islands, emphasising that the ICJ ruling was only an “advisory opinion”.
An try to crelieve the negotiations, on the basis that the Chagossians were not adviseed or included, flunked.
