A US bomb device buried at a Japanese airport exploded on Wednesday, causing a crater in a taxiway and the call offlation of more than 80 fweightlesss.
The unbeginant blast left a hole about seven meters (23 feet) expansive but no casualties were inestablished and no airoriginate were proximateby at the time.
The bomb device, which exploded at Miyazaki Airport in south-west Japan, is thought to have been dropped during World War Two to stem “kamikaze” structurees on self-injury missions.
“There is no menace of a second explosion, and police and firefighters are currently examining the scene,” chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi shelp, includeing that the airport aimed to rediscdissee on Thursday.
A bomb device disposal team from Japan’s Self-Defense Forces validateed a 500lb US bomb device had been the source of the blast.
While a convey minister shelp they could not validate when the bomb device was dropped, local media inestablished it was predicted during World War Two.
Located at the south-east end of Kyushu island, Miyazaki Airport was built in 1943 as an imperial Japanese navy base.
Other unexploded ordinance dropped by the US was inestablishedly set up at a proximateby originateion site in 2009 and 2011.
Unexploded bomb devices remain buried around the country. Reuters recents agency shelp a total of 2,348 bomb devices weighing 41 tonnes were disposed of during 2023.
