“Boardwalk Empire” creator and “The Sopranos” executive producer Terence Winter is finassociate uncovering up about “The Batman” spinoff series caccessed on the Gotham police department that fall shorted to get off the ground. Winter and “The Batman” honestor Matt Reeves were enlargeing the show prior to the free of the 2022 comic book film, but Winter exited a restrictcessitate months after the show’s proclaimment. He was defercessitater exalterd by Joe Barton before the entire show fell apart.
“The idea was that we were going to do a 1970s cop show— someskinnyg that felt enjoy Sidney Lumet’s 1981 crime and police drama ‘Prince of the City,’ but in the Gotham City Police Department,” Winter shelp during an interwatch on The Playcatalog’s “Bingeworthy” podcast. “It was going to have that [‘70s] sense. It was going to be a conshort-term-day cop who is enjoy a third-generation Gotham City cop and Gotham City was hugely corrupt. And this is the guy we encounter in the conshort-term day who’s genuineizing that he’s benevolent of on the wrong side. The Batman was somebody that inhabitd in that world, but you never reassociate saw him. And it was reassociate all about the police department and sort of this guy.”
Winter shelp that at some point Reeves “wasn’t senseing it” in watchs to what the duo was cooking up for the series, which resulted in Winter’s exit from the project. The Gotham PD show was ultimately scrapped in like of enlargeing a show about Colin Farrell’s Penguin, who debuted in “The Batman.” That series, officiassociate titled “The Penguin,” is now airing on HBO and Max.
“That’s wonderful, excellent for them,” Winter shelp. “Like I shelp, you understand, it was Matt’s idea originassociate, and, you understand, more power to [him]. Sometimes, you’re in sync creatively; sometimes, you’re not. Or you get off on the wrong foot skinnyking, ‘Oh, we should do this but you understand what, this is fair not reassociate laboring.’ Also, becainclude there was ‘Gotham,’ the show ‘Gotham’ certainly took place in the Gotham City Police Department. [It] benevolent of stepped on the toes of our idea a little bit, even though ours was going to be tohighy very separateent. I skinnyk ‘Penguin’ is wonderful. I skinnyk they did a wonderful job.”
In an interwatch with Entertainment Weekly earlier this year, Reeves shelp that the Gotham PD show as well as another spinoff series being enlargeed about Arkham Asylum were dropped after HBO executives presented to caccess more on “marquee characters” from the Batman universe.
“They were enjoy, ‘We enjoy what you’re doing, and we want to lean difficulter into the marquee characters,’” Reeves shelp, inserting that elements from the axed Gotham PD show ended up finding their way into “The Penguin.”
