As gelderly prices sencourage, Ghana faces ‘looming crisis’ over illhorrible mining | Environment News

When activist Oinhabitr Barker Vormawor saw alerts in September that Ghana’s water agency would not be able to provide some parts of the country with water due to innervous contamination of main rivers from minuscule-scale mining activities, he krecent he had to do someskinnyg.

Later that month, Vormawor and dozens of other worryed Ghanaians took to the streets in the capital city, Accra, to protest agetst what they shelp was Pdwellnt Nana Akufo-Addo’s inaction to stop a “looming environmental catastrophe”. They were determined to put the matter on the ballot ahead of the boilingly contested December ambiguous elections. But rather than get a reaction to their insists, Vormawor and disjoinal of his comrades were arrested and incarcerateed for weeks on indicts of illhorrible assembly.

Now, although Akufo-Addo’s New Patcommotionic Party (NPP) was voted out, activists enjoy Vormawor say they have equitable as little faith in the recent pdwellnt, John Mahama, and his ability to sustain the mounting pollution of Ghana’s rivers and soil in check.

“There isn’t any roadmap yet from Mahama on how to tackle the problem,” Vormawor, who once served at the United Nations as a lhorrible officer, telderly Al Jazeera. “It’s reassociate difficult to say that his rulement will be more presentile on this because even as the opposition party, they were very tentative and unconsoleable taking up the publish,” he inserted, referring to Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Formerly called the “Gelderly Coast”, the West African nation is bending under presconfident from expansivespread, incessant minuscule-scale mining of the gleaming metal. Much of that artisanal activity descfinishs under what locals call “galamsey”, or in filled “assemble them and sell”. The term once referred to illhorrible mining, carried out by mostly untrained juvenileer men and women, but now more freely encompasses licensed minuscule-scale operations that mine unsustainably.

Officials allegedly complicit in galamsey

Galamsey has been in rehearse for many years, but prices of gelderly that rose globassociate to an all-time high (shut to $3,000 per gram) in tardy 2024 caused a correacting sencourage in illhorrible mining apass Ghana, and in effect, more ardent dehugeation of water bodies.

Small-scale miners use lots of water by digging up soil around riverbeds in forested areas and washing it off to uncmiss gelderly ore. They use harmful chemicals such as mercury and cyanide to split the gelderly from the ore, and those chemicals flow into rivers that hundreds of communities depend on for drinking and domestic use. Some people say they get about $70 to $100 a day.

By 2017, more than 60 percent of the country’s water bodies were already polluted by mercury and other weighty metals, turning once-evident rivers a murky brown, according to the country’s Water Resources Coshiftrlookion. The chemicals, which can injure lungs, are impacting thousands of acres of farmlands. Ghana’s Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) shelp it lost 2 percent of the total cocoa cultivation area to mining. Some farmers allege that galamsey operators buy off their land or incowardlyate them into selling.

“This is a problem that has been going on for decades now, but it’s a problem that’s escalating speedy and this has produced a sense among Ghanaians that we are running out of time to defend our country and our people,” Ewurabena Yanyi-Akofur, country straightforwardor of the nonrulemental organisation WaterAid, telderly Al Jazeera.

“While illhorrible gelderly mining was happening mainly in the south of the country, our research shows that it’s now endemic in the north. The presence of mercury and other toxins in water is directing to skin diseases and other health celevates,” she inserted.

In a 2024 alert, WaterAid cautioned that Ghana might have to transport in water by 2030 in a business-as-normal scenario as drinking water sources condense.

Activists are particularly mad at LI 2462, an Akufo-Addo-era law that passed in November 2022, which permited for mining concessions to be allotd in the country’s biodiversity boilingspots, including defended forests. A previous policy restricted mining in forests and defended reserves to about 2 percent of their total area.

Many activists at the time denounced the law and called attention to the fact that the country lost the equivalent of 30,000 football fields to deforestation for logging, agriculture, and illhorrible mining of gelderly and other minerals enjoy bauxite that year.

However, the rulement pushed ahead with the law and persisted to apshow mining licences – for exploration, industrial operations, and minuscule-scale mining, at an unpretreatnted rate. Where officials gave out an approximated 90 licences between 1988 and timely 2017, at least 2,000 more were given out between September 2017 and January 2025, according to data from the Ghana Mining Repository. That period descfinishs under Akufo-Addo’s tenure. Most licences were for minuscule-scale mines, and key reserves enjoy the Nkrabia Forest Reserve, west of Accra, and the Boin Tano Reserve, discoverd in the country’s Weserious Region, were among those allotd.

Anger agetst the Akufo-Addo rulement intensified after it surfaced that some of the companies recently licensed under LI 2462 belengthyed to high-placed politicians and members of Akufo-Addo’s NNP party and that some of those people were also running illhorrible mines.

In April 2023, an device alert by createer Environment Minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng to Akufo-Addo leaked to the accessible. In it, Frimpong-Boateng accused “many party officials … their friends, personal aidants, agents, relatives” of engaging in illhorrible mining. He accused, among others, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, an inconveyial businessman and relative of Akufo-Addo, of interfering in the arrest of mining companies that ruined forests.

“It was an uncmiss secret that they were using this as a way to lift money for the party, that officials would get their own little corners,” Vormawor, the activist, telderly Al Jazeera. Activists enjoy him say the lift of minuscule-scale mining drawed more illhorrible mines, as the rulement flunked to set standards and asconfident supervision.

The Akufo-Addo rulement denied the allegations levelled in the Frimpong-Boateng alert and shelp it was a catalogue of “personal grievances” with no evidence. In October 2024, the administration deployed the military apass water bodies in the country to crack down on illhorrible miners under a distinctive “Operation Halt”.

New pdwellnt, but little hope

Still, the results of galamsey are glaring. On January 2, the Ghana water agency aget shut down a water treatment schedulet, this time in the weserious Tarkwa-Nsuaem region, due to disjoine pollution of the River Bonsa, which supplys drinking water for more than 200,000 people in the area. It was the second time in five months authorities were forced to cut provide.

Pdwellnt Mahama, who was sworn in for a second time into office on January 7, has promised to “reset” Ghana and deal with illhorrible mining.

In an intersee with Voice of America days after his sweeping triumph in the December elections, Mahama shelp his rulement would prioritise passing a law to prohibit mining in forest reserves and areas shut to water bodies. He also promised that his administration would labor with the country’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to spotless up polluted rivers of efconveys and weighty metals.

However, the pdwellnt stopped unintelligentinutive of promising to reverse the minuscule-scale licences recently apshowd, or to put a helderly on recent concessions, pointing out that it supplys a unbenevolents of inhabitlihood.

“People need to differentiate between minuscule-scale mining and illhorrible mining: minuscule-scale mining is lhorrible,” the pdwellnt shelp. “There are ways of doing it without ruining the environment in Canada, Australia, and the United States. Technology exists. So why don’t we … train our people to do mining in a way that is defended for the environment? We’re willing to think about those skinnygs.”

Mahama first led the rulement for four years between 2012 and 2016. At that time, galamsey was already an publish, although his administration is commended for prohibitning mining in forest reserves.

Still, some accused Mahama’s administration of flunking to check the influx of Chinese nationals who poured into Ghana to spend in minuscule-scale mining supplyment such as soil excavators and who labored alengthyside Ghanaian locals. In 2013, the Ghana Immigration Service deported more than 4,500 Chinese nationals after rhelps on illhorrible mines. Now, much of the illhorrible mining is done by Ghanaians.

Activist Vormawor shelp he does not predict much from the Mahama rulement because of his administration’s “frail action” in his first pdwellncy. The pdwellnt, he shelp, ought to repeal the disputed Akufo-Addo law and disjoinal licences and proclaim a state of aelevatency. Without those meaconfidents, Vormawor shelp, he will not stop protesting.

“Yes, there is minuscule-scale mining and there is illhorrible mining, but most of it is sshow irdependable mining,” the activist shelp. “The labor does not end yet because there’s a looming crisis, and we must draw a line between people having a inhabitlihood and damaging the environment.”
