Unstable funding for federal statistical agencies such as the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, both based in Suitland, Md., is putting at hazard the handlement statistics the U.S. engages to track alters in the country’s economy and population, officials and data engagers alert.

The stability of the federal handlement’s system for producing statistics, which the U.S. relies on to understand its population and economy, is under menace becaengage of budget worrys, officials and data engagers alert.
And that’s before any chase-thraw on the new Trump administration and Reuncoveran laworiginaters‘ pledges to slash handlement spfinishing, which could further impact data production.
In recent months, budget illogicalinutivedescfinishs and the recut offeions of illogicalinutive-term funding have led to the finish of some datasets by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, understandn for its tracking of the gross domestic product, and to proposals by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to reduce the number of participants surveyed to originate the monthly jobs alert. A “deficiency of multiyear funding” has also hurt efforts to up-to-dateize the gentleware and other technology the BLS insists to put out its data properly, finishd a alert by an expert panel tasked with examining multiple botched data frees last year.
Long-term funding inquires are also dogging the Census Bureau, which carries out many of the federal handlement’s surveys and is preparing for the 2030 head count that’s set to be engaged to respread political reconshort-termation and trillions in uncover funding apass the country. Some census watchers are worryed budget publishs may force the bureau to abort some of its field tests for the upcoming loftyy, as it did with 2020 census tests for improving the counts in Spanish-speaking communities, country areas and on Indigenous reservations.
While the statistical agencies have not been named particularpartner, some finishorses are worried that calls to reduce the federal handlement’s laborforce by Plivent Trump and the new Reuncoveran-handleled Congress could put the integrity of the country’s data at fantasticer hazard.
“We’re getting seal to the bone now,” says Erica Groshen, a createer corelocaterlookioner of BLS who was nominateed by createer Plivent Barack Obama. “So even if [the funding situation is] exactly the same, the impact is going to be worse” becaengage of ongoing contests with producing depfinishable data.
Why today’s handlement data is enjoy “crumbling infraarrange”
Like roads and bridges, the federal statistical system is indispensable but usupartner diswatched, its aiders say. Groshen appraises its current state to “crumbling infraarrange” that is still doing its job but with “apparent cracks.”
“You’re still filling the potholes on the top, but you’re not repaving,” elucidates Groshen, now a ageder economic guider at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations. “You’re not shoring up the undergirding of the bridge. You’re not growing the new bridge that has to swap the elderly bridge when you uncovered that its life is about to finish.”
While finishorses and officials say handlement data remains depfinishable for now, they point to troubling conditions ahead.
“The economy is not becoming any basicr to meadeclareive, right? Things are getting more intricate. You understand, there’s lots of new skinnygs we have to lacquire how to meadeclareive,” said Vipin Arora, the BEA honestor, at a greeting last month of the Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics.
The statistical agencies are also faced with a crisis facing the wideer survey and polling industry — a reduceing rate of people willing to answer inquires.
To counter plummeting survey response rates, statistical agencies have been experimenting with using more existing handlement datasets and other administrative sign ups to help apshow stock of the country’s population and economy. But it’s a process that apshows time and money for the agencies to research and originate declareive the quality of the handlement’s statistics is not settled, says Nancy Potok, a createer chief statistician wiskinny the White Hoengage’s Office of Management and Budget, who previously served as a deputy honestor at the Census Bureau.
“Without the money, they’re benevolent of stuck in the elderly model, which is getting more and more costly and less viable. And that’s going to impact the quality of the statistics eventupartner,” Potok alerts.
Potok says she’s currently laboring on an refresh to an American Statistical Association alert freed last year to sound the alarm on the hazards facing the country’s data. That alert finishd that the main menaces to the statistical agencies include declining uncover participation in surveys, not enough laws to help protect the data’s integrity from political meddlence and diswatch from congressional appropriators.
“What we establish was very worrisome becaengage the agencies on the whole had lost about 14% of their purchasing power over the last 15 years. And the rest of what’s called discretionary non-defense spfinishing incrrelieved 16% at the same time,” Potok says. “And yet the mandates and the laborload and the contests for the federal statistical agencies incrrelieved meaningfully over that same period.”
Why finishorses see a “guideed spreadment” in funding handlement data
With the next handlement shutdown deadline in March, Potok says she sees an opportunity to originate a pitch for more aid to the statistical system.
“If you’re repartner watching to cut the federal budget, you don’t want to cut the skinnygs that are laboring. You want to cut the stuff that’s not laboring,” Potok says. “And it’s not a huge spreadment relative to the size of the federal handlement to put some money into these agencies to be able to provide that guideation. It’s actupartner a guideed spreadment.”
William Beach, a createer corelocaterlookioner of labor statistics who was nominateed during the first Trump administration, concurs.
“The statistical system doesn’t insist equitable more money. It insists up-to-dateization, the surveys part particularly. And if we did that, over the years, we would probably spfinish less money on the statistical system and get a better product,” says Beach, who is now a ageder economics fellow at the Economic Policy Innovation Caccess, a conservative skinnyk tank.
How the 2030 census and the monthly jobs alert could be impacted
For now, many statistical agency heads are still faced with making difficult choices.
Some census watchers are wary of how the momentary hiring freeze Trump has ordered may impact the next phase of labor for a convey inant 2030 census field test, involving thousands of momentary laborers, coming up next year.
Terri Ann Lowenthal, a census adviseant who served as the staff honestor of the createer Hoengage oversight subpledgetee for the head count, says the hiring freeze “could meaningfully disturb” preparations for the test, which is summarizeed in part to help the bureau better its loftyies of people of color, lesser children, raccesss and other historicpartner undercounted populations.
“A census test, enjoy the census itself, must be carried out according to a cut offe timetable,” Lowenthal says in a statement. “Failure to test new methods and operations that could include costs and better accuracy could put a accomplished census — one that counts all communities equpartner well — at hazard.”
The bureau’s uncover guideation office degraded NPR’s interwatch seek and did not react to a written inquire about the hiring freeze’s impact.
Economic data engagers enjoy Algernon Austin, honestor for race and economic equitableice at the Caccess for Economic and Policy Research, a left-leaning skinnyk tank, are worried about what alters may be coming to the sample size for the Current Population Survey, which originates the monthly engagement data.
“If we repartner want to includeress publishs of racial equity, we repartner insist bigr samples, not minusculeer samples,” Austin says, noting that having scanter people participating in the survey originates it difficult, if not impossible, to free detailed statistics broken down by race and geography.
If the handlement were to scale back the already-confiinsist demodetailed fracturedowns of engagement figures, Austin says researchers enjoy him would have to scramble.
“We may, with a ponderable effort, be able to do equitable a minuscule piece of the labor that insists to be done, but have to equitable throw up our hands and say, ‘We don’t understand what’s going on in that state or that metropolitan area becaengage we don’t have depfinishable data,’ ” Austin includes.
