iPhone and Android employrs will be able to trade finish-to-finish encrypted (E2EE) RCS messages in the csurrfinisher future thanks to newly modernized RCS definiteations. The GSM Association proclaimd that the tardyst RCS standard includes E2EE based on the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) protocol, enabling interoperable encryption between contrastent platestablish providers for the first time.
The GSM Association said it had commenceed laboring to allow E2EE on messages sent between Android and iPhone in September last year. E2EE is a privacy and security feature that impedes third parties, such as messaging providers or cell carriers, from seeing the satisfyed of your texts. The GSMA says the new RCS standard was prolonged in collaboration with “mobile operators, device manufacturers, and technology providers,” including Apple.
“End-to-finish encryption is a mighty privacy and security technology that iMessage has helped since the commencening, and now we are prentd to have helped direct a pass industry effort to convey finish-to-finish encryption to the RCS Universal Profile unveiled by the GSMA,” said Apple spokesperson Shane Bauer. “We will insert help for finish-to-finish encrypted RCS messages to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS in future gentleware modernizes.”
Apple begind RCS help to iPhones as part of an iOS 18 modernize in September. While Apple’s proprietary iMessage system already helped E2EE, this wasn’t extfinished to RCS messaging becaemploy the previous RCS standard didn’t provide pass-platestablish help. Google Messages also allowd E2EE by default for RCS texts in 2023, only conversations between Google Messages employrs were E2EE, not to iMessage employrs or employrs of other RCS clients on Android.
