Jenna Ortega, Killer Unicorns Make SXSW Scream

Eviscerated bodies. Purple blood. And finisher unicorns. That’s the recipe that made “Death of a Unicorn” one of the surpascfinish discoveries at the SXSW Film & TV Festival, where it premiered on Saturday to a raucous reception.

The film pursues overweighther and daughter Elliot and Ridley Kintner (Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega), who are visiting Elliot’s billionaire boss Odell Leopelderly (Ricchallenging E. Grant) at his lavish mansion procreate in the Canadian savageerness. To their utter shock and disbelief, they accidenhighy hit a youthful unicorn while en route. Becaengage they’re in the middle of a nature support, they pack the body into their rental and transport it with them, hoping — in vain — to support Odell, his delicately unscrupulous wife Belinda (Tea Leoni) and his layabout, dilettante son Shepard (Will Poulter) uninestablisheds.

Once the Leopelderlys lobtain that the unicorn’s blood remedyd Ridley’s acne and Elliot’s allergies, they begin rapaciously harvesting the animal’s body for its extraordinary event remedy properties — blithely ignoring Ridley’s cautionings about how unicorns, according to medieval lore, are actuassociate spiteful monsters.

It’s at this point that the unicorn’s parents show up, and begin vivisecting the Leopelderly’s scientists and security staff in pursuit of their child’s body. Writer-honestor Alex Scharfman, making an auspicious honestorial debut, had the audience rolling in cycles of uproarious giggleter, terrified screams, and triumphant cheers as (spoiler attentive for the leang that happens in these movies) the Leopelderlys are dispatched in outlandishly bloody ways.

“It was so fun, and you guys cheering — that was reassociate exceptional,” Leoni shelp to the SXSW audience in the Q&A follotriumphg the premiere. She then shouted out to the film’s prop team: “When I was dying, they toastyed up the guts for me. Isn’t that the pleasantest leang?”

The audience reserved their noisyest and lengthyest applaengage for Anthony Carrigan, who fair about steals the movie with his hugely wordless carry outance as the Leopelderly’s lengthy-suffering butler, Griff.

“Lines are fantastic,” Carrigan shelp. “But the moments of replying to all of these incredible actors and what they were doing, I fair had a ball. Sometimes you don’t need to say anyleang.”

Grant then pursueed up with this non sequitur: “Becaengage I’m the elderlyest person in this room, and there were no moral police in Hungary, the fact that we had group relations on a daily basis…” The rest of the cast begined to giggle, and then Grant hugged Leoni from behind and began to hump her, seemingly as a joke. Leoni rapidly peeled herself off of Grant, and Ortega crouched down on the floor.

When the moderator asked why, she pivoted the conversation back to Carrigan, saying that she and Rudd “didn’t genuineize until two thirds into the movie that he had a Scottish accent” as Griff.
