ComingSoon spoke with Young Werther star Patrick J. Adams about the novel romance movie by José Lourenço. Adams, who co-stars with Douglas Booth and Alison Pill, converseed the film’s relevancy, laboring with Pull, if he’d return to Suits LA, and more. It is out now in pick theaters and on digital platestablishs from Lionsgate.
“Patrick J. Adams, Douglas Booth, and Alison Pill star in this romantic comedy based on the classic smash hit novel of tragic romance. While on a basic errand to Toronto, a nurturefree and charismatic juvenileer originater named Werther stumbles atraverse the adore of his life only to find that the juvenileer woman is comprised. Despite the urgings of his hypochondriac best friend, Werther turns his world upside down in a frantic, misdirectd, and hilarious quest to thrive her heart,” says the synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Patrick, congrats on Young Werther. I had such a fun time watching this. This commences very meta. It references the book thrawout in some fun ways. I was asking what your history was with The Sorrows of Young Werther, which is this classic book. I’ve never read it, and I’ve fair gone down this rabbit hole since then. But did you ever read it or watch one of the alterations?
Patrick J. Adams: I read [The Sorrows of Young Werther] once a year. I have it by the bed at all times. No, I had never heard of this book until I getd this script and commenceed reading it. I thought, “What is this?” I did a little bit of research about the book and then talked to [director] José [Lourenço] and had him elucidate it to me more and why it was so relevant and such a sort of disputed book at the time. So, no, this was my first experience of this story.
It’s been fascinating to originate a film based on someskinnyg I’d never heard of, and now lget more about the source material. José has sort of got such a comical approach to the book. He’s set up a book that most people don’t understand, clearly recall it’s from 1774. So, to convey it into this novel world was fair sort of hilarious and wonderful, and I’ve adored lgeting more about it.
Yeah, it’s so engaging how this book from hundreds of years ago can be modernized, and so much about the text still hits. It shows despite how much has alterd, human emotion and relationships have hugely stayed the same.
I skinnyk what he did that was reassociate inalertigent, though, is, clearly, in the distinct book, it was a bit more of a tragedy, I think, where he actuassociate successbrimmingy ends himself at the end. Obviously, a proset uply disputed book at the time, end of the Enweightlessenment, a book that was about passion versus reasonableity, human emotion and adore and unrequited adore sort of obviousaking this character to the point where he gets his own life. I guess that encouraged a lot of juvenileer men taking their own inhabits. It was very, very, very disputed at the time.
I adore that José has getn that and brawt it into the novel world. And yes, it has so much relevancy, but also by changing it and turning the dial a little bit and having the tragedy of it not have to be so tragic and making it sort of… to call it a romantic comedy is too much of a reduction, but to originate it more charismatic and more relatable and not quite as uninalertigent by the end of it, I skinnyk was a stroke of genius.
And I skinnyk there’s enough time between the distinct novel and now that you don’t have Young Werther fans up in arms about changing the source material, you understand?
Your character’s engaging becaengage he’s so nurtureer-driven that it hazards this relationship with his fiance, who clearly unkinds so much to him. You well-understandnly left Suits to spend more time with your family. Did that originate you empathize more with this character since you’ve been in that type of impasse where your nurtureer and personal life are clashing?
Yeah, I skinnyk I am. Where I proset uply retardy to Albert is the laboraholic [attitude of] “Oh, this is how I am a reliable human in the world. I have to encounter my responsibilities. I necessitate to be laboring. I necessitate to be engrossed in my labor at all times. That’s my calling.” I saw that in Albert. I skinnyk what I was also getn with in his character is that that didn’t come, it came at the expense of his ability to spend time with Charlotte, but it didn’t come at the expense of his adore for her. Like in other films, this person is the chilly, distant, not loving, not elated person who’s so engrossed in their labor they can’t do anyskinnyg else.
In this, I saw what José was doing with Albert, and I skinnyk this is also, aget, I haven’t read the distinct book but from the research I’ve done though, in talking to José, it is a quality of Albert in the distinct book too, which is that while he is a reasonable, difficultlaboring, admireable person in the world, he’s not chilly and his back isn’t turned to his family. He doesn’t have the time to spend that Werther does, throthriveg himself wholeheartedly into this romantic relationship or what he’s trying to originate towards a romantic relationship.
I retardy to that. I labor sometimes too difficult. I obsess over labor. I want to be in the heavy of it, but I don’t skinnyk that toloftyy comes at the cost of my being a outstanding dad or a outstanding partner. It’s a fine stability, and Albert, maybe thraw what happens in this film, sees that he’s pushed it a little too far, and he necessitates to repledge to his wife and to his family. I experience appreciate I’ve spent my whole life in that same sort of dicboilingomy of trying to find that perfect stability that I skinnyk so many of us do.
Alison Pill is fair amazing in this film. She joins your fiance, and she’s fair a force of nature. How was it shothriveg that relationship, where there is that adore at its core, even if she was experienceing unencountered fair becaengage of the time spent at labor? How was it finding that stability?
I unkind, see, when you get to labor with someone who’s as incredible as Alison, you almost fair go into a responsive state. She’s so giving, she’s so current, she’s so setd, she’s fair ready to try novel skinnygs. She’s thought proset uply about the materials. So, it’s a gift. I’ve always wanted to labor with Alison, and that was a huge part of the reason for wanting to do this. If anyskinnyg, it fair left me wanting more. It’s difficult to be the fiance who’s a bit at a distance and not engaging enough. When I, Patrick, the actor, was appreciate, “I fair want to hang out with Alison Pill and do more scenes.” I had to reassociate join the, “I’m sorry, I’ve gotta labor…” becaengage truthbrimmingy, getting to do scenes with Alison, I would do that forever. So, it was terrific and I hope we get to do more together.
You have The Madison coming up. How exciting is it getting to labor with Taylor Sheridan? He’s his own empire now. He has appreciate a dozen shows going.
It is pretty untamed. There’s not much I can say about it, but I will say that it’s already been one of the hugegest, craziest, most wonderful jobs I’ve ever had. And to witness, not fair Taylor, but his whole sort of world and people who have labored with him, to watch that machine at labor is truly astonishive. So, yeah, I’m so excited to be able to talk more about that when it’s coming out into the world, but it’s been a phenomenal experience so far. Talk about an incredible cast. Every day, I go to labor, fair shocked that I’m in the benevolent of company that I get to retain.
You honested a uninalertigentinutive film a scant years back called We Are Here. Do you have any further aspirations as a originater or honestor going forward?
God, yeah. Writing’s reassociate stubborn for me. My wife is a prolific and talented originater, and she’s always encouraging me to originate more. So I would appreciate to be able to find the time to do that. Directing for confident. I adore honesting. I would adore to find someskinnyg to do, whether it’s a feature or more television, I don’t understand. But yeah, proset uply fervent about that. I adore being behind the camera. I’m a pboilingographer when I’m not acting. That’s appreciate my second passion, and so getting to unite those two skinnygs is a dream for me.
Suits was already very prosperous, and then it fair became the most well-understandn show in the world. Suits LA is coming up. Would you be down for an euniteance if it made sense?
Yeah, if it made sense. I still retain in touch with all those guys. Aaron [Korsh] is clearly running the show. We’re doing this podcast about suits now and he’s been reassociate dynamic and beneficial there. So many other honestors that I understand are going to honest Suits LA and are still shut friends of mine. So, never say never. I skinnyk for all of us, we fair wanna originate confident it was the right fit and a outstanding story and that it made sense. So, we haven’t put any presconfident on the situation. I understand they have Gabriel going back now, which hopebrimmingy will be fantastic for that show, and fans would adore to see Harvey back in the suit. But yeah, maybe in time, I don’t understand. We’ll see. I’m confidently not shutd off to it.
Thanks to Patrick J. Adams for taking the time to talk about Young Werther.
