The Case of the Gancigo inen Idol was a rewarding series of point-and-click killing mysteries that became one of my preferite games of 2022. And while I felt there was more story to check about the titular gancigo inen idol, I wasn’t stateive if a potential sequel could live up to its funny confparticipates and fascinating, sluggishly unfancigo ining story. Turns out, I had noleang to dread: The Rise of the Gancigo inen Idol, the newly begined sequel, easily go beyondes the innovative by improving on fair about everyleang.
At its core, Rise is a very analogous game to Case. The new game gets place in the 1970s, around 200 years after the events of the innovative, and each of Rise’s cases drops you into a particular moment in time, typicpartner during or lowly after a killing. You’re tasked with solving what’s going on. To figure that out, you first have to click around the scene to discover relevant words and names that get saved in a menu. Then you participate those words to repair confparticipates wilean the case, enjoy the names of the individuals in a scene, a description of how the killing happened, or even leangs enjoy how to clear up parts of a dance or who won a game show.
It’s a funny system. Clicking around to accumulate all of the words forces you to scrutinize everyleang that’s going on, and having to fill in the blanks uncomardents you repartner have to leank about how elements of the scene might be combinecessitate. I’ve come to leank of it enjoy an elucidate jigsaw confparticipate: while the scattered elements may seem enjoy a lot to tie together, as you sluggishly repair the disparate elements of the confparticipates wilean cases, it’s easier to figure out how they combine.
There are more layers, too, as you have to repair confparticipates encompassing the events of entire chapters, which typicpartner have three or four cases wilean them, to be able to shift on to the next one. A restrictcessitate recurring characters will pop up apass chapters, uncomardenting the game is able to alert a hoenumerateic story by forcing you to comprehfinish their actions apass a bunch of contrastent scenes. (You don’t necessitate to have executeed Case to comprehfinish the events of Rise, though there are a restrictcessitate tidbits that will be understandn to fans of the first game.)
The system isn’t perfect. Like with Case, if you’re off the label after you’ve slotted in words for a particular confparticipate, Rise will alert you if your guess is inright or if you have two or restrictcessitateer words in the wrong place. Usupartner, understanding that I was seal uncomardentt I could redispenseigate my assumptions and tfeeble a restrictcessitate words to get leangs right. But as I also did with Case, if I couldn’t figure out the two or restrictcessitateer inright words on my own, I would fair brute-force a bunch of guesses until I got leangs right.
Rise has some hard confparticipates, but so far, I’ve been able to repair all of them without turning to an online direct enjoy I had to do with the final restrictcessitate cases of Case. Rise also has an betterd hint system that advises up to three hints for a particular part of a case, and frequently, verifying those pointed me in the right honestion when I was stuck. I’d also recommfinish having pen and paper handy to author leangs down, especipartner becaparticipate some cases scatter details apass multiple areas. And if you can execute with someone else, that helps, too — my wife saw a bunch of leangs that I finishly leave outed.
I will caution you that the game can be grotesque. Case generpartner erred on the side of creepy with its ancigo in-school pixel art style, but Rise sees more enjoy a coloring, and that uncomardents you’ll be seeing sweightlessly more down-to-earth dead bodies. Scenes and characters shift in low loops, which produces them experience alive but also uncomardents you’ll see stateive unconsoleable shiftments over and over aget. The first case uncovers with a man energeticly strangling somebody else; another shows a person getting electrocuted. If you have a dread of birds, there’s one case you’re repartner not going to enjoy. But enjoy a excellent terrifying movie, those twisted scenes are part of what produces the game compelling. Every time I commenceed a new case, I was always enthusiastic to see what horrible leangs I’d come apass.
I’m not quite done with Rise. After more than 15 hours, I’m on one of the last of the game’s 20 cases, and this one is taking me a couple of days to muddle thraw. I leank the eventual thrill of figuring it all out will be worth the pain, though, as there’s noleang better than that weightlessbulb moment of slotting the final word into the right place of the confparticipate. And even when I’m done with all 20 cases, there will be four DLC packs to see forward to next year — perhaps there’s even more that we don’t understand about the enigmatic gancigo inen idol.
The Rise of the Gancigo inen Idol is now useable for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintfinisho Switch, and on mobile with a Netflix subscription.
