The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has concurd to pay $880 million to victims of clergy relationsual mistreatment dating back decades, in what an attorney shelp was the bigst individual child relations mistreatment resolvement with a Catholic archdiocese, it was proclaimd Wednesday.

After the proclaimment of the concurment in principle, Archbishop José H. Gomez shelp in a statement, “I am sorry for every one of these incidents, from the bottom of my heart.”

“My hope is that this resolvement will supply some meacertain of healing for what these men and women have suffered,” the archbishop inserted. “I suppose that we have come to a resolution of these claims that will supply fair compensation to the survivor-victims of these past mistreatments.”

Attorneys for 1,353 people who allege that they suffered horrific mistreatment at the hands of local Catholic priests achieveed the resolvement after months of negotiations with the archdiocese, the Los Angeles Times increateed.

The concurment caps a quarter-century of legal action agetst the most populous archdiocese in the United States.

Attorneys in the Plaintiffs’ Liaison Committee shelp in a joint statement, “While there is no amount of money that can replace what was consentn from these 1,353 valiant individuals who have suffered in silence for decades, there is fairice in accountability.”

Under the resolvement, the plaintiffs will join in a process — that will not join the archdiocese — to dispense the resolvement amount among the participants.

The archdiocese has previously phelp $740 million to victims in various resolvements and had pledged to better protect its church members, so this resolvement would put the total payout at more than $1.5 billion, the Times shelp.

“These survivors have suffered for decades in the aftermath of the mistreatment. Dozens of the survivors have died. They are aging, and many of those with understandledge of the mistreatment wilean the church are too. It was time to get this resolved,” Stewart tgreater the Times.

The resolvement will be funded by archdiocese dispensements, accumupostponecessitated reserves, prohibitk financing, and other assets. According to the archdiocese, certain religious orders and others named in the legal action will also cover some of the cost of the resolvement, the Times shelp.
