Two of these women are dead, the rest displaced: Devastating impact of a year of war in Gaza

Dunya is hagedering a pboilingo. Seven smiling faces see back at her, a snapsboiling of the inhabits of friends who toiled and socialised with each other.

She is in the middle of the picture, beaming. Now, her smile has gone. This pboilingo was apshown equitable over a year ago, at a birthday party towards the end of September 2023. Just days before the world alterd.

The seven women all toiled on the nursing staff at al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the hugegest medical intricate in Gaza but also a site doubted by Israel of housing a Hamas order centre. When the war begined, al Shifa was strikeed.

Two of the women in the pboilingo are dead.

Rawan Abu Zbeidah, who is second from the left, wearing a bconciseage hecompriseress, was ended on 11 November, aprolonged with members of her family. She was pregnant. Anwaar Yassin, who is third from the right, was ended at the begin of December, aprolonged with her husprohibitd and children, in Nuseirat, central Gaza.

All the other women in the pboilingograph have been displaced and dispensed.

“That last time we accumulateed together was a sugary day,” Dunya says. “It was pretty. A week before 7 October. We never envisiond it would be our last. All that’s left now are the pictures we have together, our memories. Our inhabits equitable disecombineed.”

Dunya fled Gaza City and now toils further south at a hospital in Deir al Balah.

“Currently we’re scattered in contrastent places,” she says of her friends who are still ainhabit. “One of us is in the north, there’s no way for me to achieve her. She can’t come here, I can’t go there.

“A restrictcessitate of them are displaced in the south. We try our best to protect in touch. We try to see each other if it’s possible. We get on video calls, we try to stay as seal as possible.”

‘We can’t convey ourselves to hug this truth of losing her’

Gaza is a place of ruined createings and shattered inhabits.

In Gaza City, Houssam is sheltering in the ruined arrange of Abdallah Al Dayhan School, where his youthful daughter, Dareen, used to study. The school has been battered, but it’s still equitable about standing, equitable about protected.

Dareen fled to the south in the punctual stages of the war, promised the city of Khan Younis would be protectedr. Instead, she was ended, aprolonged with four of her relatives, in an Israeli air strike.

Houssam, who stayed in Gaza City aprolonged with Dareen’s brothers, is haunted, his eyes hollow.

“Dareen was appreciate any other teenager,” he says. “She was protected and she had ambitions. She dreamed of graduating to become a doctor. We can’t convey ourselves to hug this truth of losing her. We wanted to be there for her.”

Not far away, Dareen’s establisher teacher, Roula, also shelters. She used to inhabit atraverse the road, but her home was blown up.

“It’s a contest for students who want to lget,” she says. “I lost a lot. I lost my home, my family. Some of my students who are very dear to me.“

She still teaches local children and tries to protect a sense of normality.

But how to be normal when the world outside is rubble?

“There is no protected space for students,” she says. “Schools have been aimed but we have no choice but to carry on teaching, despite being in a constant sense of dread. This is no environment for lgeting – we have no chairs, no tables, no whiteboard. No classroom.”

A year on from the Hamas strikes on 7 October and the outfracture of war, Gaza is a shellshocked place filled of shellshocked people – a land of ruined createings and wrecked inhabits.
